Notes In 1833 two manuals were published that had a huge impact on design in the nineteenth century. J C Loudon’s Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farms and Villas Architecture, which ran through ten editions over the next thirty years, extolled the virtue of principles of harmony of a house and its contents and deplored the vulgarity of taste and bad workmanship. Specimens of Gothic Architecture with illustrations by A C Pugin, AW Pugin’s father, became a key sourcebook for the gothic revival in its striving for accurate rather than fanciful detailing. The side table designed in the gothic manner with its massive architectural tracery is informed by both. Its proportions while heavy have not been overwhelmed by ornament and the use of a marble slabs as a top for sideboards and side tables instead of wood was preferred by Loudon.
