Summary

[edit]
Description

Norstead, L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. The longhouse, or langhús, was the standard living arrangement of the Scandinavians of the Viking Age (and, in fact, of their contemporaries all across Germanic Europe). A longhouse this size probably would have consisted of about half a dozen private living spaces, a large central common room heated by an indoor fire pit that was also used for cooking, and perhaps a barn at one end where crops and/or livestock would have been stored.

Norstead, L'Anse-aux-Meadows, Terre-Neuve.
