L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. Here I am, just arrived in L'Anse aux Meadows - the site where, in 1000 AD, Leif Erikson and his hardy band of Vikings settled in a land they called Vinland (Land of Wild Grapes); the first Europeans to set foot in North America. The excavated remains of his settlement are preserved as the L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, which I visited in 2001 and, quite frankly, found a bit boring - there's a modern visitors' centre, a number of depressions in the ground where buildings once stood, and a single dwelling reconstructed using authentic methods, but not much more. So, when planning this trip, I decided to take a different approach. Enter Norstead. Billing itself as "A Viking Port of Trade", you can already probably tell that careful attention to historic authenticity isn't quite as important here as at the National Historic Site. But that's okay with me - this place is a full-fledged living history museum, with tour guides and interpreters in period costume, a whole lot more reconstructed buildings, games and activities, and generally a lot more to keep a person entertained than dry, academic historic artifacts. What you see at Norstead seems to be a somewhat fair (though slightly kitschified) representation of Viking life, if not the life of the Viking settlers of Vinland - and on the whole, I enjoyed it a lot more.

Also, Norstead is located about half a mile (0.8km) further north than the National Historic Site. So, the next bunch of photos represents the furthest north I've ever travelled.

Ici je venais d'arriver à L'Anse-aux-Meadows - le site où, en l'an 1000, Leif Erikson et sa bande hardi de Vikings se sont installés dans un pays qu'ils appelaient Vinland (le pays des raisins sauvages); les premiers Européens à poser le pied en Amérique du Nord. Les vestiges fouillés de sa colonie sont préservés comme le Lieu historique national de L'Anse-aux-Meadows, ce qui j'avais visité en 2001 et, très franchement, j'ai trouvé un peu ennuyeux - il y a un centre de visiteurs moderne, quelques dépressions dans le sol où se trouvaient jadis les bâtiments, et une seul logement reconstruit avec des méthodes authentiques, mais pas beaucoup de plus. Donc, lors de la planification de ce voyage, j'avais décidé de prendre une approche différente. Ainsi, Norstead. Autoproclamé "Un Port de commerce viking", on pourrait dire déjuà que l'attention particulière à l'authenticité historique n'est pas aussi important ici qu'au lieu historique national. Mais ça marche pour moi - ce lieu est un musée d'histoire vivante à part entière, avec des guides et des interprètes en costumes d'époque, beaucoup plus de bâtiments reconstruits, des jeux et des activités, et généralement beaucoup plus à divertir le visiteur d'artefacts historiques ennuyeyx. Ce qu'on voit à Norstead semble être une représentation assez juste (bien qu'imprégnée un peu avec le kitsch) de la vie des Vikings, bien que pas la vie des colons vikings du Vinland - et dans l'ensemble, je l'ai apprécié beaucoup plus.

En outre, Norstead est situé à environ 800 mètres plus au nord que le Lieu historique national. Donc, le prochain groups de photos représente le plus au nord que j'ai jamais voyagé.

Por lo tanto, al planificar de este viaje, decidí a tomar un enfoque diferente. Introduzca Norstead. Describiéndose a sí mismo como "Un Puerto de Comercio Vikingo", ya se podría saber que la atención cuidadosa a la autenticidad histórica no es tan importante aquí como en el Sitio Histórico Nacional. Pero está bien conmigo - este lugar es un museo de historia viva hecho y derecho, con guías turísticos e intérpretes en trajes de época, mucho más edificios reconstruidos, juegos y actividades, y por lo general mucho más para mantenerse amusado que los artefactos históricos aburridos. Lo que se ve en Norstead parece ser una representación nastante justa (aunque imbuido un poquito con kitsch) de la vida de los vikingos, si no la vida de los colonos vikingos de Vinland - y, en general, eso me gustó mucho más.
