St. Barbe, Newfoundland. This terminal is the southern end of the ferry crossing of the Strait of Belle Isle between Newfoundland and Labrador: operated for the provincial government by Labrador Marine, the MV Apollo makes the hour-and-45-minute trip between here and Blanc-Sablon, Québec - a mile (1.8km) west of the Labrador border - up to three times per day between April and January, calling instead at Corner Brook's less icy harbour during the balance of the year. God almighty, did I wish I could have gone on that trip.

As for St. Barbe itself, it may not be a large town (population about 180), but it's an important one - and not only as a transportation hub, but also as a cultural centre for the surrounding region, with a sports arena hosting occasional events and the Straits Festival featuring festive revelry and mouth-watering treats cooked with bakeapples - the local specialty called "cloudberries" elsewhere in the world.
