Description

Port au Choix, Newfoundland. Seen here from across Gargamelle Cove, Port au Choix is a fairly large town of 850 citizens. Settled in the very early 20th Century after some 350 years of its harbour being known to Europeans, its name comes from the Basque "Portutxoa", or "the little port". Later on, after the French were granted fishing rights off Newfoundland's west coast in 1713, the name was Gallicized to its current spelling ("Port aux Choix" is also recorded). Despite the collapse of the North Atlantic cod stocks in the early 1990s, the fishery remains the cornerstone of Port au Choix's economy in the present day - the town boasts a sizable fleet which catches mackerel, herring, and other species, as well as a large shrimp processing plant - and the Port au Choix National Historic Site is an archaeological treasure trove bearing remnants of four different pre-Columbian cultures.

Port-au-Choix, Terre-Neuve.
