Description

Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. Seen here from Lobster Cove Head, this is easily the largest and most important town in its vicinity (population roughly 1,000), not to mention the main service centre for visitors to Gros Morne as well as area residents: in Rocky Harbour's commercial district, splayed out along Main Street North, you can find an ATM, a fair-sized grocery store, a number of restaurants and hotels, and a host of other services that its tiny neighbouring settlements lack. In the 18th and 19th Centuries, the harbour that gave the town its name was frequented by French fishermen, to whom the waters off the west coast of Newfoundland (the so-called "French Shore") were ceded in 1713, under the auspices of the Treaty of Utrecht. The first settler, one John Paine, arrived no later than 1809, but the town as such dates to around 1874. By 1900, a post office, a schoolhouse, and an Anglican church served a small but vibrant community where the main economic activity, as elsewhere in the region, was either fishing or logging, depending on the season.

Rocky Harbour, Terre-Neuve.
