Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, seen here, stands at the entrance to Bonne Bay, a bit over 2 miles (about 3.6km) northwest of downtown Rocky Harbour. It was in 1889 when G. C. Fearn, the local representative to the Newfoundland House of Assembly, pleaded to his colleagues for a better navigational aid than the ad hoc setup of townspeople donating oil to a local fisherman who kept a lamp in his own home - but the lighthouse was not inaugurated until 1898, after a protracted period of construction. However, it also served a second necessary role, as a signal station where messages to and from ships in the bay were relayed by semaphore. Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse was fully automated in 1969; as for the keeper's quarters, it served as a private residence for a period before coming under the ownership of the national park, which now uses it to house interpretive exhibits on local history. Rocky Harbour, Terre-Neuve. |
