Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. Western Brook Pond is one of those fjords I mentioned in the last caption - or, rather, several millennia ago it was. At the end of the last Ice Age the pond was an outlet to the Gulf of St. Lawrence that had been scoured out of the side of the Long Range Mountains by a retreating glacier, but when the ice had fully melted and its immense weight was no longer tamping down the land at what is today the shoreline, the rock rebounded back upwards and cut the fjord off from the sea, leaving Western Brook Pond as a landlocked lake 10 miles (16km) in length. The mountains are still there, though - they surround the pond with sheer walls of rock 2,000 feet (600m) high over which some of the highest waterfalls in Eastern North America tumble. This awe-inspiring setting is a big part of the reason why the boat cruises on the lake - on which I was preparing to embark as I took this photo - are one of the most popular tourist activities at Gros Morne National Park. Every year between June and September, Bontours runs two or three two-hour narrated tours every day from its dock at the west end of the pond. Mais les montagnes existent encore - elles entourent l'étang avec des parois rocheuses escarpées de 600 mètres de hautque, sur ​​lesquelles quelques-unes des cascades les plus hautes cascades de l'est de l'Amérique du Nord plongent. Ce cadre grandiose est une grande partie de la raison pour laquelle les croisières sur le lac - sur l'une desquelles je me préparais à embarquer alors que j'ai pris cette photo - sont l'une des activités touristiques les plus populaires au parc national du Gros-Morne. Chaque an, entre juin et septembre, Bontours gère deux ou trois visites commentées à deux heures de durér chaque jour qui partent à son quai au bout ouest de l'étang.
