North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The town skyline as seen from the harbour. It's 4:30PM, and we've finally set off for Port aux Basques. 16 and a half hours late. I was mad as hell. If you're headed to Newfoundland by car, learn my lesson: allow a full day for the ferry voyage. The ship seen here in the distance is the MV Caribou, which, of course, is not the same ferry that was sunk by the Nazis in 1942. Named in honour of its predecessor, the second Caribou was built in 1986, three years before the Smallwood that I was currently aboard, but otherwise had an almost completely parallel history: they were built by the same shipyard, MIL Davie Shipbuilding in Lévis, Québec; they were identical in size and sported the same design, dubbed "Gulfstream", which came about after years of research by CN Marine into effective techniques of cutting through sea ice; they were both retired in 2010 and scrapped the next year at the same salvage yard in India.
