Description

North Sydney, Nova Scotia. It's about 3 in the afternoon, and the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood has finally arrived at port in North Sydney; this is the ferry I would take to Port aux Basques. The Smallwood's male namesake was a charismatic, larger-than-life figure of Newfoundland politics who vociferously and successfully advocated for union with Canada at the Newfoundland National Convention of 1949, then settled into a long, controversial tenure as provincial premier. As for the ship, it's a 580-foot (180m) icebreaking ferry that plied the Cape Breton-Newfoundland route for over two decades beginning in 1989. With room enough for 1,200 passengers and 350 cars (or 77 tractor-trailers), it and its sister ship, the MV Caribou, were among the largest ferryboats in use in North America: they were as big as medium-sized cruise ships. At the time I boarded it, the Smallwood was nearing the end of its operational life: two years later, in 2011, it and the Caribou were retired, sold, and scrapped.

North Sydney, Nueva Escocia.
