Mulgrave, Nova Scotia. Our continuing eastward advance toward Cape Breton Island on this foggy afternoon took us across the Canso Causeway, which carries the Trans-Canada Highway and the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway over the Strait of Canso, between Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia. Cape Breton was long one of the most important industrial centres in the Maritimes, but by the turn of the century the growth of the coal mines and steel mills at Sydney was being stunted by the slow, tedious process of ferrying railroad boxcars across the strait. Ambitious proposals for a steel cantilever bridge were considered, but rejected in favor of this 4,500-foot-long (almost 1,400 meter long), 130-foot-wide (40 meter wide) rockfill causeway which was opened to traffic in 1955. Despite this, however, Cape Breton remains a true island: it's separated from the mainland by the Canso Canal, a narrow break in the connection that allows ship traffic to pass through the strait. |
