Description

Pictou, Nova Scotia. A view from near the south end of the Harvey Veniot Causeway toward the town centre of Pictou. Since its foundation in 1767 on the former summering site of an itinerant Mi'kmaq community, Pictou's identity and economy have been closely tied to the shipping lanes of the Northumberland Strait. Shipbuilding is especially important - the Pictou Shipyard sprang to life after a branch of the Intercolonial Railway came through town in the late 1880s, and it's famous for having constructed the Canadian Merchant Navy's "Park Ships" during World War II. These days, though, many former industrial sites on the waterfront have been redeveloped for recreation and tourism.
