Description

Halifax Public Gardens, Spring Garden, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Victoria Jubilee Fountain, with Griffin's Pond in the background. Inaugurated in celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, the fountain sees the nymph Egeria standing atop a basin supported by a stout Corinthian column, surrounded by four babies each mounted atop a sea serpent. Like much of the Public Gardens, the Jubilee Fountain has been the beneficiary of a great deal of improvements recently. Hurricane Juan, which badly damaged the Gardens in 2003, was the catalyst: it spurred the establishment of the Public Gardens Foundation, which raised $1 million in its first 48 hours of existence and went on to be a massive financial boon to the Gardens, much of whose infrastructure hadn't been updated in over a century. Thanks to the Foundation, in 2012 the fountain was restored top-to-bottom and received a new eco-friendly pumping system; as well, a new roof was put on the bandstand the year before.

Jardins publics d'Halifax, Spring Garden, Halifax, Nouvelle-Écosse.
