Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Historic downtown Lunenburg as seen from the harbour. Lunenburg was founded in 1753, the last years of the rivalry between the British and the French over their respective colonial possessions in North America, as an attempt to create a bulwark of Anglophone Protestant settlement in the heart of Acadian country. In the 19th Century, it grew into an important shipbuilding port, outfitting wooden fishing schooners such as the Bluenose long after that industry had waned in other parts of Nova Scotia. Today, its lovely streetscape, seemingly straight out of a small town in Britain, makes Lunenburg one of Nova Scotia's top tourist destinations - in fact, its exceptionally well-preserved 18th-century colonial architecture has earned its entire town centre the status of a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's also remarkable for the unique dialect spoken there - Lunenburg English sounds like the bastard child of Pennsylvania Dutch English (think Goofy from the Disney cartoons) and the Boston accent. |
