Description

Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Fort Anne National Historic Site. The story behind this one is that Great Britain, who was competing with the French for domination of the terra nullius that was the Maritimes, sent a band of raiders who sacked the Habitation at Port-Royal eight years after it was built. The French regrouped, went to the other side of the Annapolis River, and built this bigger, easier-to-defend fortification, which they also called Port-Royal. It lasted nearly a hundred turbulent years as capital of French Acadia, then it was taken by the British in 1710 who renamed the fort and the town around it after Queen Anne (retaining the "royal" part for the latter), and the colony Nova Scotia.

Annapolis Royal, Nueva Escocia.
