Summary

[edit]
Description

Mission (TRMM) satellite got a partial look at hurricane Irene on August 27, 2011 at 12:13 p.m. EDT. TRMM's TMI showed that Irene was dropping rainfall over a large area of eastern North Carolina at that time. TRMM rainfall images are false-colored with yellow, green and red areas, which indicate rainfall between 20 and 40 millimeters (.78 to 1.57 inches) per hour. Dark red areas are considered heavy rainfall, as much as 50 mm (2 inches) of rain per hour. The TRMM satellite is managed by both NASA and JAXA. At 2 p.m. EDT on August 27, 2011, Hurricane Irene was moving across eastern North Carolina. Maximum sustained winds were near 85 mph. Irene was moving north-northeast at 13 mph and was located near 35.5N 76.3W, 45 miles WNW OF Cape Hatteras, N.C. and 95 miles south of Norfolk, Va. Pressure was 950 millibars.
