Description
Français : Élément classé comme monument (17/07/1980) : Le four à chaux Madelon, rue de la Lys, à Tournai

Ce four à chaux est un des témoins de l’intense activité industrielle tournaisienne du XIXe siècle. Invariablement lié à des bancs de calcaire affleurant, les fours à chaux sont encore présents à Tournai, ici dans le hameau d’Allain ou sur la rive gauche de l’Escaut dans le quartier Saint-André. Au début du XIXe siècle, Tournai comptait près de 130 fours à chaux !

Concassée et broyée, la pierre extraite de ces bancs de calcaire était ensuite chauffée et réduite en poudre blanche. Cette poudre entrait dans la composition du ciment Portland utilisé dans le monde entier. Le procédé de fabrication de la chaux demandait de nombreuses attentions pour atteindre et conserver la température nécessaire à la cuisson de la pierre. Il était également très énergivore en bois. Devenus obsolètes face aux procédés de production modernes tels que les fours rotatifs automatisés, les fours à chaux sont abandonnés.
