the rood screen of Tournai Cathedral

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: A Gothic rood screen of the cathedral having been demolished by the iconoclasts in 1566, it was decided a few years later and after the troubles had subsided, to rebuild it.

Thus, the sculptor Corneille Floris de Vriendt was called. It was inspired by the tradition of the Roman triumphal arches in fashion during the Renaissance. The Italian influence is evident in the type of materials used, the colours and shapes of the characters sculpted and executed in stucco.

The new rood screen, completed in 1572, consists of three semicircular arches set on Doric red marble columns and black capitals. It has three alabaster statues: a Virgin and Child occupies the centre and is surrounded by Saint Piat, the first evangeliser of Tournai, and Saint Eleutherus, one of the first bishops of the city.
