Title
TOT Ring from Roxby cum Risby
Description
English: Copper alloy

Finger ring. Cast TOT ring. A flat band with convex medial ridge; the ridge has been hammered flat at the bezel, a process which has widened it at this point. A crude border to the bezel comprised two rows of punched dots either side of the relict ridge, the inner dots bearing straight incised tails pointed towards the outer row, possibly essaying a cabled effect. A single row of three dots continues the border on one side, while three more haphazardly positioned dots on the opposite shoulder of the ring appear to represent its opposite side. Within the field thus defined, an off-centre circular punch-mark of diameter 2.3mm is flanked by a pair of incised arrows or bird foot marks pointing outwards; on one side the 'arrow' is accompanied by an incised angular lightning flash. The impression is of an illiterate attempt to imitate a TOT legend, which has left the T's flanking the central O lying on their sides.

'TOT rings' are especially associated with the territory of the Corieltauvi tribe; the legend is thought to be a contraction of the name Toutatis, a Celtic or Belgic god. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400.

Internal diameter: 16mm, Band width (at bezel): 11mm, Band thickness: 1.6mm, Weight: 2.84gms.
