Description

Three of the squadron's Tornado F3 fighter planes of the Royal Air Force, which came to Malta after an absence of 65 years, The squadron took part during the REMEMBRANCE DAY commemoration by flying over the War Monument in Floriana . During the Second World War, this squadron was based in Malta. During that period the squadron was equipped with Spitfire fighter planes and had only three planes in the first days of the war, they were known as FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY. In the World War ll, the skies of Malta have witnessed some of the most famous Air - Battles.

Britain was caught unawares in 1939 as the British establishment believed that the First World War and the League of Nations would not permit that another war to break out. They were proven wrong and Malta being part of the British Empire had to bear the brunt of war as Britain itself. Throughout the war the casualties were high and the population had to rely on the convoys from Britain. Before arriving here these convoys had to pass through the gauntlet of massive enemy fire especially as they neared Sicily. Only a few ships succeeded in their enterprise and one of the most famous in the ‘Santa Marija Convoy” of the 15th August, if it had not arrived Malta would have capitulated changing the outcome of the war in the Mediterranean as the British would not be able to supply their troops in Egypt as the Mediterranean would be under Axis control.

To-day, three of the Royal Air Force squadron's Tornado F3 Fighter planes carry the names of FAITH, HOPE and CHARITY together with the Maltese Eight- Pointed Cross. - MALTA 2008
