For those not familiar with the M-103 Heavy Tank, Wikipedia has a write up. The M-103 was conceived as a response to the IS-8 and other super heavy Soviet tanks, but the M-60 Main Battle Tank and MBT tactics made the Heavy tank obsolete. The Soviet Heavy tanks proved to be less effective than originally feared. The M-103 was overkill against the Soviet T54 / T55.. The M-103 had the same gasoline and then Diesel engine and 2 speed transmission as the M-48 and M-60. The M-60 was a 50-54 tons. At 60 tons, the M -103 was underpowerd and unreliable. The rifled 120mm gun required two loaders, one for the shell and one for the separate brass propellant cartridge. The US Army retired its M-103s with the introduction of the M-60 in the 1960s. When the Marines received M-60s, in the 1970s, the last M-103s were retired. Wikipedia lists 39 remaining examples of M-103, M103-A1 and M-103-A2 (this one) and their developmental ancestor, the M43. |
