[edit]DescriptionT2C. Mr Stryver congratulates his client, by Phiz.jpeg |
English: A Tale of Two Cities, Mr Stryver proudly congratulates his client (II, 4), by Phiz. Congratulations by Phiz (Hablot Knight Brown). Illustration to Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities. Book II, Chapter 4. All the Year Round (July, 85); issued June. A delighted Stryver congratulates his client on the result of the case whilst Lucie and Dr Manette who have been watching the proceedings await him. The choices of positioning of character and their stances are significant: Stryver is jubilant and self-congratulatory in his puffed-out pose; by contrast, Darnay appears elegant and understated as he extends his hand, his erect posture signifies his upright character and virtuous nature; Lucie’s positioning behind Darnay is effective in indicating a connection between them. Phiz depicts Sydney carton lingering in the shadows, framed by the arch of a doorway, full of resentment and jealousy. He resents Darnay who serves as a reminder of what he might have been had he chosen a different path and is jealous of the sympathy and admiration of Lucie Manette which Darnay has secured. |
