消化槽において汚泥を摂氏37度から38度程度に温め、約30日間おいて消化(分解)させると、汚泥はメタンガス(消化ガス)と消化汚泥(沈殿物)とに分かれ、メタンガスは北にあるガスタンクへ、消化汚泥は北東にあるMAP施設へ送られる。ガスタンクに貯留されたメタンガスは、ボイラーや焼却炉の燃料として有効利用される。汚泥の処理過程で発生するリンを含んだ消化汚泥は、MAP施設で行うMAP法によりマグネシウムが添加され、MAPとしてリンが回収され、肥料として有効利用される。MAPとはMagnesium Ammonium Phosphate(リン酸マグネシウムアンモニウム)の略である[1][2]。
