Description

Family:Myrtaceae Local name(Telugu): Nerudu, Black berry Distribution: Found in dry forests, also planted along roadside and gardens.Limited to Indian subcontinent and Australia. 10-15 mts tall trees, bark irregularly flacking, Leaves elliptic, acute, dark green shining above, dull beneath, coriaceous; Flowers 1cm across, greenish white in terminal panicles, Calyx tube turbinate, limb 4 lobed, petals 4 rounded, usually falling off as a calyptrate lid; stamens numerous, free, ovary 2 celled, style1 stigma simple; Fruit dark purple colored 1 seeded berry. Fruit edible, wood is also used in house building and agriculture purpose.
