| Description | This Syrphus torvus hoverfly was enjoying a brief sunny spell on the Mahonia at the front of my house in Ipswich (TM166450) this morning (28-Dec-2015) in one of the warmest Decembers on record. If you look closely, you might see the hairs on its eyes that are a characteristic of this species. Previous ID (S torvus) thanks to Joan Childs on the Facebook UK Hoverflies group page, but Roger Morris commented on iRecord: "I have a feeling that the eye hairs are a secondary hair that is far smaller than in S. torvus - seen in S. ribesii - therefore some caution here" and changed the ID to Syrphus sp. |
