Description
English: Fresco dating back to the Umayyad era from Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbî, part of a larger work showing two musicians and a rider shooting a bow. The palace was palace built during the reign of Hisham bin Abdul Malik. This instrument has two features also seen on Chinese Tang-Dynasty ere pipas, the ornamental extra tip on the end of the pegboard and the shape of the soundhole.

Lute found in Syria, dating back to c. 730 A.D. had sound holes of similar shape to those on lutes in China and Japan.
