Rückseite: ΣYPΑΚ-ΟΣΙΩΝ. Viergespann (quadriga) im Galopp nach l. in Dreiviertelansicht, darunter umgestürzter Pfeiler. Nike mit Siegeskranz nach r. schreitend, den Lenker, der den Kopf in die Frontale wendet, bekränzend. Einfache Bodenlinie, im Abschnitt Ähre nach ... Kommentar: Die Vs. zeigt die Nymphe Arethusa. Sie ist eine der Nereiden, welcher Alpheios nachstellte. Um ihm zu entfliehen, wurde Arethusa entrückt und tauchte als Quelle auf der Insel Ortygia bei Syrakus wieder auf. Die unmittelbare Nähe dieser Süßwasserquelle zum Meer mag zum Entstehen dieser Sage beigetragen haben. Eine Signatur auf der Ampyx weist den Vs.-Stempel als ein Werk des Kimon aus. Kimon schnitt zwei sehr ähnliche Stempel der Arethusa en face, von denen dieser als der etwas unharmonischere zu bewerten ist. Nach Tudeer ist Kimon in die II. Periode der signierenden Künstler einzuordnen, Mildenberg datiert ca. 405 v. Chr. Neu ist der Wechsel der ursprünglich auf der Rs. zu suchenden Kopfseite hin zum Vs.-Stempel, welcher technisch bedingt ist. Die vorangehenden Athenaköpfe in der Vorderansicht des Eukleidas, die sich noch auf der Rs. befanden, bekamen durch die direkte Einwirkung des Prägeschlages sehr schnell Stempelbrüche. Aus dieser Erfahrung heraus verlegte man diese Darstellung nun wohl auf den Vs.-Stempel. Die mythologische Beziehung zwischen Arethusa und Syrakus einerseits und die ähnlichen Motive für Frauenköpfe andererseits lassen eine Identifikation auch älterer Darstellungen mit Arethusa als möglich erscheinen.
