ENGLISH CHURCH ARCHITECTURE in the fourteenth century, and still more inthe fifteenth, their zeal declined, until theybecame the veritable forerunners of the mo-dern tramp, and the terror of good housewiveswho lived near the main roads. For suchreasons as these, and also for their restlessand innovating spirit, the begging friars weremuch disliked by the secular and monasticclergy; whenever the latter built theirchurches, they would not forego their oppor-tunity of paying off old scores if theywanted subjects for the misericords. The goat of the Bestiaries is fond of thehigh mountains. It can tell from a long dis-tance whether men are merely harmlesstravellers, or hunters coming to destroy it.It is thus typical of Christ, the far-seeing Sonof God, Who foresaw the deceit of the devil,and His Own betrayal by Judas.
