Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sylva Elementary School in 1951. It served as the principal feeder Elementary School into Sylva High School from 1929 until 1960 and from 1960 until 1973 as the principal feeder into Sylva-Webster High School. The building had three floors including a basement with a library and cafeteria, and had either 16 classrooms with eight on the upper two levels or 12 classrooms on the upper two levels and an auditorium in the rear, taking up two floors on the backside of the building. It was either I-shaped or E-Shaped. Not much information exists on the building except it was built in 1929, condemned and renovated in 1948, and had at least seven exterior doorways, including five in the two front exterior stairwells. Each room in the school had two windows, and there were two rooms on at least three sides of the building. It closed in 1973 when it was consolidated with Webster and Savannah Elementary Schools into Fairview Elementary School, and it was demolished the following year. Its ironwork over the front doorway now serves as a railing on a commercial building located on NC 107 near Wal-Mart Plaza. It is sadly missed. The old Sylva Township Central High School building, built in 1924, was demolished in 1990, and the old 1930s Vocational Shop building has been condemned. Today the former campus is Mark Watson Park on Business US 23 behind the Courthouse in a small cove near Downtown Sylva.
