Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Syenite dike in anorthosite from the Precambrian of New York State, USA. (public display, Limper Geology Museum, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, USA)

The cut-and-polished slab shown above is from the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Adirondacks bedrock is dominated by anorthosite of Precambrian age. Anorthosite is an uncommon, crystalline-textured, intrusive igneous rock dominated by calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar (usually grayish-colored) plus minor blackish-colored pyroxene. The mostly gray material at the top and bottom of the slab is anorthosite. Much of the pyroxene in this sample occurs as elongated patches, which is the result of regional metamorphism. Technically, the gray rock is not anorthosite (crystalline-textured & igneous), but metanorthosite (coarsely-crystalline or foliated & metamorphic). The foliated texture in this rock is weakly developed.

The band of multicolored rock running through the metanorthosite is a syenite dike. Syenite is a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock dominated by sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar (oligoclase), plus minor calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar, hornblende amphibole, and quartz.
