Title
sword belt hanger
Description
English: Cast gilt copper-alloy clothing fastener, possibly a sword belt hanger, with a rectangular loop attached to an oval boss with a lion's head motif in high relief. There is an integral circular attachment loop set at right angles to the boss on the opposite side to the rectangular strap loop. The boss has an engraved line around the head of the lion, making it look like a cameo setting, which was popular during the 18th century. Both surfaces of the hanger would have originally been entirely gilded and much of this survives on the upper face. Probably a naval fastener as similar examples were recovered from the wreck of HMS Innocence and are on display at Portsmouth Historic Ships Yard. The lion's head motif is also commonly used on the pommel or hilt of naval swords, as it represents the Crown. Similar to HAMP1024 and HAMP2958 on the database which date from the 18th century.
