fered somuch. Flushed with their past success and elated withhope for the future they recommenced their march. They had no exact information as to the position of theFederal army, and were in fact groping their way inthe dark—figuratively as well as literally—every senseon the alert to avoid the enemys picket lines. On reaching Little Ebenezer Creek about midnightthey were chagrined to find the bridge destroyed, butafter reconnoitring for a time, were satisfied that thecoast was clear on the opposite side. Finding somebroken planks they constructed a raft and paddledthemselves across the stream. They were now on the Savannah River Road, overwhich Kilpatricks cavalry and the Fourteenth ArmyCorps had passed but a week before. Old camping-grounds were numerous along their way, and eachwas examined closely for any bread or other eatablesthey thought might have been left by the army. They were closely engaged in this search, when-Who comes there? was gruffly shouted by avoice near them.

They were sitting upon their horses in theshade of some cypress-trees. One asked, Who areyou ? to which I replied, A scout to General Hardie, and must not be detained, as I have important infor-mation for the general. The picket replied, Im1 instructed to take everyperson to the officer of the picket that approaches thispost after dark. I cant help it, sir. It is not customary to arrestscouts, and I must pass on/ You cannot; I must obey orders. I do notdoubt the truth of your assertion ; but until you haveseen the lieutenant, you will not be allowed to passthis post. Finding that I had met a good soldier I saw thatit was useless to trifle with him, and tried to consolemyself with the thought that I should be able to dupethe
