One of the monitors, a large boy, observing thismovement, informed Mr. Carter that Willard Glazierwas going to cut for home, in other words, to leaveschool without permission. The master, upon receiving this intelligence, starteddown the aisle towards young Willard; but thatrestive youth perceiving the movement, made rapidtime for the door, and dashed down-stairs closely pur-sued by the now furious pedagogue. Having some rods the advantage at the start, theboy reached the exterior of the building first, andstruck out in a straight line for home. The storms which prevailed throughout the entirewinter in St. Lawrence County, had piled up theiraccumulated snows over the space of ground thatseparated the school-house from Willard Glaziers home.Over this single expanse of deep snow many feet hadtrodden a hard path, which alternate melting andfreezing had formed into a solid, slippery, back-bone
