our hundred pages, with ten illustrations. Mr. Mun-sell would be only too ready to fill the order, butpolitely suggested, as- a preliminary condition, anadvance of two hundred dollars! Our author modestly at confessed, without hesitation, that he was not worthtwo hundred cents; had no means of obtaining such asum, and could therefore advance nothing. The worthyold gentleman was startled, and answered that suchwas the custom of the trade. He then inquired ifGlazier had any friends who would endorse a note forthe amount at thirty days. The reply was that he hadnone; that he would exert himself to obtain a small sumfrom army friends, and if he succeeded, would hand itover to him; that his only capital at present washis conduct and character as a soldier, for testimony towhich he would refer to his late commanding officer,and, he added, faith in the success of my book.He further offered to solicit subscriptions for the bookhimself before publication, and report the result to thepublisher.
