English: Sword and scabbard that belonged to Major Henry Gordon Wilding, New Zealand Field Artillery, WW1 blade type- straight, flat back, single fuller each side, etched foliage pattern to one side with winged arrows to centre; six pointed star to shoulder with brass (rivet) to centre marked "PROVED - P"; etched to other side foliage pattern and artillery symbols- cannon and flaming ball; coat of arms near shoulder; maker's marl on shoulder guard- chrome-plated steel; three band basket; sword knot near pommel; scroll quillon hilt mounts- steel; chequered side grip; banded hemispherical pommel; tang button to top grip- fish skin bound with steel or silver wire scabbard- brown leather over wood; silver coloured metal to opening; belt loop to back markings- etched to blade side- "HOBSON and SONS - -1-3-5 - LEXINGTONS - LONDON"; handwritten to scabbard- "Lt Col - H.G. WILDING - DSO, BAR - N.Z.F.A"; etched scroll below crest to blade- "DIEU ET MON DROIT" |

Notes | sword and scabbard that belonged to Major Henry Gordon Wilding, New Zealand Field Artillery, WW1 On the weekend that war was declared in 1914 Gordon Wilding turned down an invitation to play rugby for North Auckland and instead rode horseback from Kaikohe to Whangarei to enlist. He served on Gallipoli and then from France to Germany. He was twice wounded, was mentioned in despatches three times and was thought to be the only New Zealand officer to be awarded DSO and bar while still a Major. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
