The Simplon Pass (2,005 m or 6,578 ft) is a high mountain pass between the Pennine Alps and the Lepontine Alps in Switzerland.

The Simplon Pass was used during the Stone Age. Up to the 17th century it was used by smugglers and mercenaries, because the narrow Gondo Gorge was considered by Roman architects to be impassable. The Brig merchant prince Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper began to use the pass in the middle of the 17th century to bring salt on the backs of mules from the Mediterranean.

The first road suitable for vehicles dates back to the time of Napoleon, who wanted to travel southward with his cannons. The pass road can be traveled almost all year round, but it can be temporarily closed at times.
