English: 'North Star' preserved at Swindon Works, BR Western Region. The full-scale replica on its pedestal of the very first Great Western Railway locomotive, the 2-2-2 'North Star, which was built by Robert Stephenson and delivered by barge at Maidenhead in November 1837 - six months before the Railway reached there. (Beyond it can just be glimpsed the pioneering gas-turbine locomotive No. 18000). |
