Summary
[edit]DescriptionSwimming pool on Burnham on Sea beach - geograph.org.uk - 358565.jpg |
English: Swimming pool on Burnham on Sea beach. Updated April 2010.
The beach pool was first used for swimming and then boating. It was built in 1920 by the Braithwaite family in gratitude for the safe return of their five sons from the Great War. In recent years the condition of the pool deteriorated and the local authority, Sedgemoor District Council, took the decision in December 2009 to demolish it, mainly on health and safety grounds. The full story behind the decision to demolish the pool can be read here http://www.burnham-on-sea.com/news/2010/pool-concrete-decision-16-03-10.php The pool now no longer exists except in the memories of local residents and countless holiday-makers down the years and snapshots in family albums. I'm glad I took this photograph when I did. It's just a shame its quality doesn't do justice to the subject. |
