The garden Angelica gives off a pleasant perfume, andthough much cannot be said for the beauty of its flowers, it is afine bold plant, and on account of its sweetness and lively colourit finds favour wherever grown. Its roots are also fragrant. Theplant will thrive in any fairly good position that is not shaded, andthey are at home in the semi-wild garden, or on the banks of run-ning water. Angelonia grandiflora.—A small herbaceous sub-tropical plant, bear-ing long spikes of small blue flowers, resembling a pine-apple inscent. Angraecum fragrans. See Orchids. Anisotome latifolia.—A handsome umbelliferous plant from the SouthSeas, with purple flowers. The whole plant emits an aromaticsmell when bruised. Anthemis nobilis (Chamomile).—A well-known perennial plant that isfound growing wild in many parts of Britain. Its flowers, whichpossess peculiar scented attractions, are largely used for medicinalpurposes. An old writer describes it as the plant physician, fornot only will decoctions, and the dried leaves powdered, destroyinsects, but that nothing contributes so much to the health of agarden as a number dispersed through it. He further adds thatno greenhouse should be without it, for if a plant that is droopingand apparently dying is placed near the Chamomile it will recover.An eminent doctor also affirms that if a piece of the plant is laidunder the pillow it is an effectual preventative of the dreadednightmare.
