Johnstons army at High Point, NorthCarolina, in 1865 ; was present at the battles around Rich-mond in 1862, capture of Harpers Ferry by the Confederates,Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Fort Fisher,Bentonville, etc.; was never wounded, but had two horsescaptured on the occasion of the famous mine explosion atPetersburg, Virginia. Returned to Newbern in 1865; wasadmitted to the bar in North Carolina in that year, and com-menced the practice of law in Newbern, which he continued ;was elected to the Senate of North Carolina in the fall of1867, and was the first person in the Senate ever voted for bythe negroes under the Reconstruction Acts ; was a candidatefor elector on the Seymour and Blair ticket in 1868. By the will of his grandfather,John Hughes, of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, JohnHughes, of North Carolina, came into possession of a fine oldEnglish upright clock, which is still loyal enough to the landfrom which it came to play every hour, God Save the King.It stands in the hallway of his house, a splendid time-keeper,and a superb piece of mechanism, and is, according to tradi-tion, two hundred years old. It is highly prized, both for itsintrinsic value and the association connected with it. JohnHughes died at Beaufort, North Carolina, of paralysis, Sep-tember 9, 1889.
