Summary
[edit]DescriptionSwanswell Gate and city wall - geograph.org.uk - 1141767.jpg |
English: Swanswell Gate and city wall One of two surviving gates of the twelve original gates in the city wall[1] stands in the corner of Lady Herbert's garden by Hales Street. In the foreground is the entrance gate to the garden from Hales Street. It was formerly Priory Gate, the private gate for St Mary's Priory to its orchards outside the wall. When Hales Street was built alongside in 1850 the gate became a dwelling house and the archway was blocked up to give living space (it is no longer a dwelling). A listed building with grade I status.
To the right, beyond the wall, is the side of the partly-demolished Coventry Theatre. |
