Papillo machaon feeding close to the Red Fort, Malta. early march 2010 [ ssp. melitensis ] The butterfly is widespread throughout Europe, but only found in the Norfolk Broads in the UK. PS the photo posted by @oliva732000 is the related Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio glaucus which is found on the eastern half of the USA and in part of Mexico. Papilio machaon (above) is the Old Word Swallowtail or Common Yellow Swallowtail or just simply Swallowtail . Of the latter, the British insect is the subspecies britannicus whilst the Maltese subspecies is melitensis The Maltese butterfly feeds on Rue and Fennel. |
