Animal characteristics: Identification: This swallow has long, pointed wings, a short bill, small feet, and a forked tail; Habitat: Rural and urban areas; Diet: Omnivore: insects, berries; Reproduction: Some swallow species nest on manmade structures while others may dig burrows. Most are colonial nesters. The female may incubate her eggs by herself or receive help from her partner. Both parents care for the chicks; Social Structure: Many species are gregarious, forming groups for foraging and/or nesting; Behavior: Because they often feed on the wing, swallows are very agile flyers. They are commonly seen perching on open branches and wires; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: There are 90 known species of swallows.
