Description
English: Hand-coloured portrait photograph and epitaph painted 1894 in commemoration of Svend Foyn (1809–1894), a Norwegian whaling and shipping magnate. Photo taken on January 21st, 2020 in the Svend Foyn exhibition at Slottsfjellsmuseet Museum in Tønsberg, Norway (the skewed perspective in some of the photos were adjusted to make the frame into a rectangle and corners with right angels.)

født i Tønsberg den 9de Juli 1809, død paa
Gaarden Ramdal ved Tbg. 29de Nvbr. -94 Kl11 ½ Aften

Svend Foyn begyndte sit Sømandsliv 1820,

1844 foer han første Gang til Ishavet efter
Sælfangst. Ved sit Mod og Energi skabte han
en for vort Land stor Bedrift især for Tønsberg og Omegn.

I 1864 begyndte Svend Foyn Hvalfangst paa

Finmarkens Kyster, og var den første, der kunde
fange og dræbe de største Hvaler i eet Skud.

Saavel Sæl som Hvalfangst var før ukjendt i Norge, i

saa stor Udstrækning som Svend Foyn bragte det til.

For den store Fortjeneste af disse Næringsveies

Udvikling, blev Svend Foyn Ridder af St. Olafs
Orden, derefter Commandør, og 4de''November 1893
tildeltes han Storkorset af St. Olafs Orden.

Ære være og velsignet være:
„Svend Foyns Minde.”
