Summary
[edit]DescriptionSuur Munamagi Tower.jpg |
English: Suur Munamägi (in translation "Big Egg Mountain") is the highest peak in Estonia (and the Baltic states), reaching 318 meters above sea level.
It is located near the village of Haanja, in Võru County in the south-eastern corner of Estonia, close to the borders of both Latvia and Russia. The landscape around the peak is gently hilly. Close to the summit the underlying rock is crystalline and impermeable to water, creating many small lakes and ponds. Upon the peak a 29 m observation tower has been constructed which can be climbed for a fee. The first observation tower here was constructed around 1816 by Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve as a triangulation point. A mountain hut with a tall observation tower was re-established in 1939 and reconditioned in 1969. |
