Fig 5. Sketch of Windover Hill showing (1) Ancient Cambered Road, and (2) Old Sunken Coach Road. beyond the sky-line shown in my sketch, the camberedroad is found to cease before it reaches the crest ofWindover Hill. But there is sufficient indication toshow that it went on, just grazing another long moundin its ascent, and that it must have turned eastwardsafter passing the very fine round barrow on the top ofWindover Hill. Both Mr. A. Hadrian Allcroft, M.A., and the Rev. W.Budgen have since inspected this ancient road, andthey are in agreement that it forms the continuationof the Roman road which ran from Eastbourne, throughJevington, and connected up with other Romanroads in the neighbourhood of Firle Beacon. Text Appearing After Image:
LONG BARROWS IN SUSSEX 165 The long mound, referred to above, puzzled me onfirst inspection, and I wondered whether it had anyconnection with the adjoining chalk pit. The ditch onthe down-hill (north-west) side is present, but filled upnearly level. The mound is of the same length as theLong Burgh, 180 feet. The ordnance survey makesit appear some 250 feet in length, but I imagine thesurveyors included the rise with a flat top, which myplan shows adjacent to the north-east end of themound. Standing on this rise, one looks down thevery steep escarpment on to the Long Man orc Wilmington Giant. The extension of the down-hill ditch to a pointopposite the north-east rise certainly raises the questionwhether the big mound was not originally as long as thisside of the ditch, the rise having been formed subse-quently by traffic or a way cut across the north-eastend. This long mound lies about 250 feet down fromthe hill-top, and the 600 feet contour runs on to theupper part of the mound. With
