east end of the mound is cut into by adownland road. The greater part of the westernditch is scrub-covered, and the outer edge of the easternditch is overgrown with gorse. The dot-and-dash lineson the plan show that the barrow has been mutilatedin three places, but it still remains the most imposingof the five mounds figured. Horsfield mentions the Long Burgh in his Historyand Antiquities of Lewes and Vicinity, which wasprinted in 1824. He says there were then three in-dentations in the top, and that the barrow was openedin 1767, when a skeleton and urn were found in it. On completion of the above surveys, my next activitywas a prospecting tour along the hills east of the Cuck-mere. Crossing the bridge above Alfriston, I ascendedthe hill in the direction of Windover Mill, which wasburnt down about 1875. When well past the mill site,and nearing the ascent of Windover Hill, I observedwhat appeared to be two parallel ditches running upthe hill. Closer inspection showed that between these

LONG BARROWS IN SUSSEX 163 ditches ran a beautifully cambered road (for section ofsame, see Fig. 6) about 17 feet wide. For about 100yards this ancient road runs up the hill in a state ofabsolute perfection, rising three feet in every elevenof its steepest course.
