Clay Hill Mount.(Surveyed by Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Toms). ! 226 NOTES AND QUERIES Mr. Charles H. Thomlinson (son-in-law of Mr. Andrew) has madea slight excavation of the surface soil over part of the depressedcentre. He has also cut a trench into the middle of the southernside of the entrance. The interior excavation yielded one or twosherds of Norman or mediaeval pottery. The trench produced nofinds, but showed the mound is nearly entirely composed of a stiffclay, which was obviously obtained from the surrounding ditch. A pronounced bank, with ditch on the southern side, runs in awesterly direction from the eastern hedge half-way across the centreof Rough Field. The bank is 16 feet wide, the ditch being 10 feetacross. The crest of the bank is two feet above the level of the fieldand 3 feet 6 inches above the base of the filled-in ditch. The bankseems much too wide to be taken as the remains of an old hedgerow.It is a question whether it formed part of an outer bailey connectedwith the M
