also above the436 feet point and below the 500 feet contour. From the top of School Hill, Lewes, this mound lookslike two adjacent tumuli, for the reason that a largehole (outlined with a dot-and-dash line on plan),excavated east of its centre, has left the two endsstanding in the form of a camels humps. Accordingto Mr. J. H. A. Jenner, the tumulus has been namedThe Camels Humps. The material from the centralexcavation has been thrown outwards, forming a talus,which (see dot-and-dash line on plan) now concealspart of the ditch. The outline of the southern ditch,therefore, has had to be restored on the plan. The north-east and south-west ditch ends aredistinctly visible in suitable lights. The south-eastditch end has been destroyed by some kind of excava-tion, possibly for flints; and the north-west corner isnow covered by a golf green, which also borders thenorth side and extends over the ditch to the base lineof the mound. 1 Extracts from a report read to the Society, 6th April, 1921
