^ road in the direction of Rackham Farm, while a branch sent off halfway down the escarpmentin the direction of Springhead Farm has not been usedas a track in modern times at all. The south end ofthe ditch is continued as a terrace, 13 feet wide, for athousand feet along the side of a long and deep coombe, known as Medley Bottom, and where it is lost86 indisturbed ground it is directed towards a point whereMedley and Grevitts Bottoms run into the side ofStoke Bottom to the north-east of Camp Hill. Thehigher ground to the east of the earthwork commandsall the ground on its west side, hence the bank and 85 Ibid., extending from l-25-5 to 0-9-4-2. 86 Ibid,, 0-l-3-4.
Text Appearing After Image:
NOTES ON THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF BURPHAM/eTC. 47 ditch cannot have been thrown up as a defence againstattack from the east; on the other hand, if the bankwas built to defend Rackham Hill against attack fromthe lower ground to the west, it is obvious that theditch would have been dug on the west side of the bank, which is not the case. Consequently the theory thatthis earthwork was made for defence lacks support. It is evident that the bank has some object relative tothe ditch, for, instead of taking its shortest course andmaking for the steep head of Medley Bottom, it followsthe ditch for a short distance along the side of thisvalley, and delivers it as a terrace-way. In quite anumber of instances of Covered Ways on the Downsthe ditch is continued as a terrace down the side of aCoombe 87 just as in this case, and it is hard to avoid theconclusion that this great earthwork on Rackham Hillwas thrown up for the same purpose as the CoveredWays, namely, not for defence of the hill itself, but top
